NEXT MEETING: May 18th

Program:

The Business of Art with Nannette Clapman Blinchikoff:

Attention Artists: If you want to learn how-to promote yourself and how-to market your art in today’s arena, this is the lecture for you! Nannette is a sculptor and author of Promoting Art with Integrity. She uses her Five Steps of Promotion to offer perspectives from both the artist and gallery point of view; and provide countless ideas, practical exercises, and ways to adapt mainstream sales techniques to help the artist become more professional. Books will be available for purchase at the event ($20). Visit Nannette's web site at www.ncbenterprises.com to see excerpts from “Promoting Art with Integrity”.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

At our next meeting we will elect the officers for 2009-2010.  This election we will try something new: Co-presidents.   Because of personal schedules and other obligations, neither member felt able to undertake all the responsibilities of president.  Therefore they have agreed to share them.

Our nominees are:

Co-presidents – Eleanor Dean and Mary Ellen Gordon

Treasurer -- Diane Prather

Recording and Corresponding Secretary – Sherry Sheedy

Thanks to these members for agreeing to serve.  Of course, nominations will be opened during the meeting, and we welcome more candidates.  Moreover, please remember that the Board meetings are open to all MAL members; just show up and you’ll be on the Board!  (Naturally, we’ll give you a job title first.)

We hung the show at Well Real Estate at the start of the month, and it looks great.  Finally, I would like to welcome Linda Trope as a new member.  She was screened in at our last meeting and now has three works hanging at Wells.

Looking forward to see you at the next meeting.

Course opportunity:

Joyce Lister is conducting a 5-Day Summer Workshop, “Expressive Portraits and Figures in Pastel”, at the Mitchell School again this summer. The workshop runs August 17 - 21, 2009, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily. Fee is $325.00 (includes model fee).

To enroll, call Joyce at (410) 561-2494 or email: listerstudio@comcast.net

This 5-day intensive portrait and figure workshop is suitable for all skill levels and will give interested artists an opportunity to acquire and practice techniques and strategies for creating lively expressive portraits and dynamic figure paintings in pastel.  Each day will be divided into a morning and afternoon session and students will work from live models for most of the time, with two exceptions:  one session will focus on self-portraits; and another session will deal with working from photos.

Topics to be covered include: pastel materials and application techniques; facial structure and anatomy; measurement guidelines; working with color for skin tones in light and shadow; using values correctly; planning and design; painting hair, clothing, and backgrounds; and creating the illusion of depth.  Techniques for transporting, storing, and framing pastel paintings will also be discussed.

Harold Walpert will have a couple of watercolors on exhibit at the Baltimore Watercolor Society Exhibition at Quiet Waters Park from 7 May thru 14 June.

Prepare for June Meeting Now!

Our final meeting of the year is going to be a blast, but we need to give you the details now, so you can prepare.  There will be several things happening at this meeting including our end of the year party, a member art show, and an artist postcard exchange.

For the party, we will need extra volunteers to bring some snacks, as we are going to allow members to bring a guest if they choose.  Next we invite you to bring 1 piece of art to show.  All members in attendance will vote for “viewer’s choice” and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbon will be awarded.  It is inspiring to see the art our members create, and not everyone has an opportunity to make it to our art exhibits.

The final part of this extravaganza will be an artist postcard exchange.  There are many options for making your postcards.  A good size for your postcards is 4” x 6”.  You may choose to do the popular mixed media collage postcards.  Other options could include: refrigerator magnets, note cards, bookmarks, pins, earrings, or a small piece of whatever it is that you do.  Another option would be to create 1 piece of art, color copy it (or print it out of your computer), and use a glue stick to attach it to a 4” x 6” note card, or card stock.  Be creative!

Please note the postcard exchange will be for members only.  As far as how many to make: we’ve been having around 10 - 15 people showing up for meetings.  Ideally you would bring enough for everyone, but however many you feel comfortable making is fine.  Just don’t take more than you bring, in the exchange.
