February, 2010 Newsletter NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Monday, February 8th at 7:30pm Howard County Center for the Arts 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City
Programs/Speakers
February 8: Julian Maellil, owner of MAT ABOUT YOU, a frame shop in Ellicott City (on Rogers Avenue). We had a lottery ($1.00 per person) at the November meeting and one member name was picked to have a something framed by Julian (no larger than 24”x 30”). New member, David Pumplin, won the lottery to have one of his photgraphs framed. At the February meeting Julian will bring the finished piece, take it apart and show how he does the matting and framing. Julian’s number is 410-3131-8860. His website is Mataboutyou.com.
March 15: Joan Tarbell Plato, known local painter, printmaker and bookmaker, will demonstrate her style and acrylic layering techniques by creating a work of art. She will describe her process and answer any questions about art techniques and personal approaches to art. She is a signature member of the Baltimore watercolor society, the Potomac watercolor Society and a member of the Washington Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA). Her work has been juried into many prominent shows and she has received many awards. April 19: Jerry Weinstein, MAL member, will speak on “Favorite Photo Locationsfrom Gardens to Zoos.” Jerry has been doing nature photography for the past four decades, and professionally for 10 years. He has increasingly focused on portraits of flowers and photos of birds and animals in their natural settings, unsullied by the interference of human hands. His aim is to show a perspective not ordinarily noticed and to portray the beauty and serenity that exist in natureeven in the smallest and most commonplace. Jerry is a self-taught photographer and an active member of the Artists Gallery in Columbia. His website is www.naturegraphics.net All programs begin at 7:30pm at the Howard County Center for the Arts GREETINGS FROM ELLIE… We are looking forward to seeing all of you again after the long break. We want to hear about all of the good things that you have done. We were very proud of the Sandy Springs show…beautiful space and great work. We shared the reception with a local potters group and despite the weather and the Ravens game, it was well attended. The Fairhaven show will be next and screening will be at the February meeting. Connie Galerizzo will coordinate this one and can use any help that you want to offer. Quote of the month: In Joyce Lister’s class I was pondering my painting when Joyce said: “Don’t worry about the small details yetget the big shapes infirst the dog, then the fleas.” Love that one! We are considering some big changes for the League and will tell you more when we corral all the “fleas.” The Dog is in good shape. ELLIE

at C. Grimaldis Gallery 523 N. Charles Street Since his first show of photographs at New York’s American Fine Arts Gallery in 1995, John Waters’ work has become part of the collections of the BMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. The title of the show “Versailles” is from a photo still from the French palace Versailles placed next to a photograph of the Versailles apartment complex in Towson, Maryland. “Versailles” is his first show in Baltimore since 2002, with 17 Baltimore inspired works that are “tongue in cheek,” and “plays on words.” They are satirical and make the viewer see things in a different way. Much of Waters’ work is about the surrealism of the entertainment business but much of it highlights everyday things in our cultural landscape also surrealthat few people notice.
