December-January, 2009-10 Newsletter NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Monday, February 8th at 7:30pm Howard County Center for the Arts 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City
Programs/Speakers
February 8: Julian Maellil, owner of MAT ABOUT YOU, a frame shop in Ellicott City (on Rogers Avenue). We had a lottery ($1.00 per person) at the November meeting and one member name was picked to have a something framed by Julian (no larger than 24”x 30”). New member, David Pumplin, won the lottery to have one of his photgraphs framed. At the February meeting Julian will bring the finished piece, take it apart and show how he does the matting and framing. Julian’s number is 410-3131-8860. His website is Mataboutyou.com.
GREETINGS FROM ELLIE… Our last meeting for 2009 was one of pleasant surprises as well as some unresolved items. First the good news… LINDA BRAUER had her dollar drawing for Mr. Manelli’s Mat About You program for February and new member, Dave Pumplin, won a free frame for one of his photographs. Congratulations and welcome, Dave! We enjoyed our November guest speaker, Michael Farrell and his stories and slide show of his media journey. Deanna Williford and her committee had a festive fall feast for us as well. Thank you, Deanna. Now the unresolved issues… WORKERS NEEDED!!! We must find a willing person to take over as the New Member Chairperson. Brenda Mosso handled this position so well. We thank you, Brenda, for your cheerful enthusiasm and great ideas. We will miss you! Brenda has all the information and can pass it along to a member willing to take on this important chairmanship. This is a great opportunity to learn the works of the League and become truly involved in keeping up the standards of quality of which we are so proud. If you are interested, please call me. It will take a few minutes a month of your time to respond to fliers and requests for membership. New ideas for getting out the news about the League will be welcome. Also, Coordinators are needed for future shows in 2010. The show at Fairhaven Retirement Community in March is not difficult, as they take care of everything themselves, as I remember. Holy Cross is a small show in April and Wells Real Estate in May. (See exhibition news schedule). A great way to “get your feet wet” and learn the ropes for hanging a show. Please call Mary Ellen Gordon for particulars. Thanks to all of you for your help and sharing your many talents with us. We want to keep the Maryland Art League, the special organization that it is and has been for many years. Have a great NEW YEAR! ELLIE

On Sale on Newsstands on February 2, 2010 An interesting Show at Gallery 44 9469 Baltimore National Pike Ellicott City, MD PH: 410-465-5200 www.gallery44.com This show opened on November 14 and continues only through December 31, 2009 Through the Looking Glass Works by North Carolina Artist ZOOT (Terry Zash) Painting in reverse, is Terry Zash’s specialty. He works on a sheet of Plexiglass, and arranges a mirror behind it. He paints in reverse, starting with details and finishing with the broad strokes of background colors. This results in a painting that is smooth on the front surface and the texture of the paint on the back. His technique developed out of a frustration with wanting to work more three dimensionally, but with paint. Studying in San Francisco in the late 1960’s, he began working with Plexiglass and water based acrylic paint after seeing another artist work on plexiglass and discovered the reverse painting method about 10 years ago. His work is generally abstract, inspired by nature with an earthy palette. To seal and protect his work, he varnishes the back with 24karat silver, gold or copper leafing, giving any unpainted or sheer paint areas a luminous, metallic look. Many of his paintings stand alone, like sculptures rather than hang on a wall. When light shines through the paintings, they acquire a depth, becoming a 3D painted surface. Zash was recently commissioned to create 30 Plexiglass pieces for the new Medical Pavilion at Howard County. These pieces, one of which depicts a Howard County farm scene and another depicting 23 scenes from the county, are hanging in what will be the largest LEED-certified green building in Maryland. Zash loves painting on Plexiglass, stating “ I must paint and think the opposite way I was trained as an artist. Maybe that is what draws me to it.” (Adapted from an article by Amy Choi, Style Magazine,December, 2009)
